We live in a social system that loves to separate everything. We feel more comfortable if things are broken down into digestible, controllable groups and pieces.
We separate people by culture, color, religion, sex, material status, etc. We separate our planet into countries, provinces/states, cities, towns. We separate plants, animals, insects, everything, into endless divisions. Of course, much of this is necessary and even good, it helps us understand our world better, but we tend to carry it too far and invest everything into this world view.
I think this comes back to our need to rely on rational thought. It’s easier to wrap our brains around sections at a time.
But that’s not how life and nature work. It’s important for us to shift to a holistic view of life. We will always fall short with the separation model.
Our current scientific and medical systems are infamous for this. These systems focus on individuated parts and create solutions to deal with life through a neat categorical ideology. This may prove profitable to the few but it is destroying mankind as a whole and taking along many other lives with it.
In truth, your body and life itself work as a whole. Everything connected and influencing everything else.
Man’s obsessive need to understand and have control over everything keeps him separated from the magic and wisdom of this incredible world. It keeps him small and in ignorance.
It’s an isolating and lonely perspective.
A New World-View
Embracing a holistic worldview involves surrender to the greater mystery. It takes great courage and a trust in something bigger than ourselves. We have a harder time stepping back to look at the big picture, the interconnectedness, the perfect balance of it all.
This need to understand can be a beautiful thing. It’s brought us far. But when it turns into a need for complete control, we falter. It’s our weakness. It’s what’s leading us to our own destruction.
So, how do we save ourselves from this insidious, destructive world-view?
Well, ironically we have to do it as individuals.
It starts with ‘you’. You have to be willing to see things in a new way and learn to embrace the discomfort of not having all the answers.
- Open your heart and mind.
- Start looking for the subtle connections between things, people and events.
- Focus on similarities instead of differences between all people. We are humanity. We are Earthlings.
- Notice the synchronicities in your life.
- Witness the circle of life and the sheer magnificence of it all.
- Marvel at the ‘Great Mystery’ instead of fearing it.
- Trust in life.
- Learn gratitude.
None of this is easy but it’s doable.
